The Wayward Apprentice

There's a funny tendency in many of us to think that life in the middle ages was in some sense simple - but human affairs never are. The complexities of the social order, the fallout from political confusion, and the basic desire of human beings to "get somewhere" and a better life are all part of Vail's 13th century tale.

I ordered this book because I love historical mysteries, and when it arrived I was a little apprehensive because it looked like one of those do-it-yourself published books (which I have accidentally purchased before and they were really terrible) but this is an excellent book. It makes you feel like you are there in 13th century England.

For a volume of relatively few pages, the author provides reasonably good character development and a good plot, along with a good feel for 13th century life and times.
